What is the SAFE Act?
The Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgaging Licensing Act for 2008 (SAFE Act) is a federal law that was passed to protect consumers and reduce fraud on mortgage transactions. The SAFE Act requires that a banking institution and its Mortgage Loan Originators (MLOs) register with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS).
